Squeaky Rides

By Laurel-Lea Shannon

If you hear a high-pitched squeak, squeak, squeak from your bike as you ride down the road, it could be that your derailleur pulleys need lubricating (these are also known as  jockey pulleys). Cycling in the fall can be wet and dirty and the pulleys, located close to the ground, attract road grit.

But don’t worry, getting rid of the chirping noise is easy. First, clean the debris off the pulleys using a biodegradable degreaser. Then put a few drops of lubricating oil on the centre of the pulleys. Wipe off the excess. Go for a ride and soon the oil will work thorough the pulleys, eliminating the noise.

If your derailleur pulleys are dirty enough to squeak, you probably need to clean and lubricate your chain too.
