We started an indoor ride with all of our cycling buddies so we could hang out during the winter too. We ride for 2 hours, led by a qualified instructor and socialize for 2 hours over coffee. We've been going strong for 8 winters. Donations are collected for a local kid's cancer charity. We've been as many as 48 riders in a friend's warehouse. There's nothing like driving up to the loading dock at 7:30 am, able to hear the tunes blasting from inside. If I didn't know better I'd swear it was a nightclub! Stop whining and get creative Gerald H.

I think of blasting up hills on those early spring rides. Another thing that keeps my indoor workouts interesting is my training program. It adds variety and it's easier to see improvements in my fitness and technique. Try varying your routine by adding single leg drills, spin ups, intervals and simulated hill repeats to your workouts.

when I train indoors I remember why I am doing it - so that I will be bike ready for that first ride of early spring! It helps too to find other activities you enjoy during winter - like snowshoeing. When I am using my indoor bike I use my imagination and trace the roads I love to travel in my mind - sounds strange, but it works for me and keeps boredom at bay.

I have the bike set up in the living room no less, but it's just so boooooooring. Yes you can watch TV, but you can watch TV from the couch too, and without getting a weird crick in your neck. Watching TV isn't why I cycle. I cycle to get out in the fresh air and see new vistas, and give my spirit a chance to soar. Riding in the house is drudgery. I wish there was a way to make it appealing. Virtual reality headset? Maybe....in front of a wind machine....meh.

There was a beautiful tag line in a British cycling mag: Hills hurt, couches kill! "Just for the heck of it" is probably the best way to accomplish a lot of things. Thanks for the story, it's a good reminder!

Love This article...I'm both a cyclist (and cycle-fit instructor) and yoga teacher....After my cycle-fit classes, my stretching period is similar to that of a yoga sequence...my favourite poses for after cycling are the pigeon, and then the pigeon with back knee bent towards the head for a nice quad stretch, the lizard, kneeling hamstring, downward dog(mostly for stretching calves and spine-lengthening), and ending in child's pose! I've actually found that most of my participants, and in particular my older adult crowd prefers this sequence to the old-way of stretching I used to do...although not the greatest for prenatal participants, but I modify lots for them....
