Blind Cyclists Travel 100 km in Support of Vision Research

cycle-for-sightOTTAWA, April 25, 2011 – On Saturday, June 18th, the vision impaired community will team up with cycling enthusiasts to embark for the second annual Cycle for Sight, in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

The cyclists will travel 100 km from Manotick to Merrickville and back, where they will celebrate their fundraising efforts for sight saving vision research. Many of the participants are blind or partially sighted and ride tandem bikes.

“Cycle for Sight began 3 years ago in Toronto when a group of cyclists wanted to support vision research, raise awareness and empower people with vision loss to tackle any challenges they face,” says Stephanie Willett, Cycle for Sight Event Coordinator.  “We are thankful to the cycling community in Ottawa for supporting this event and helping us raise $330,000 dollars to-date for vision research – a true inspiration for many families living with vision loss that a cure is possible.”

Money raised will support the Foundation Fighting Blindness’ innovative research projects, including stem cell and gene therapies to save and restore sight, in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). These ambitious projects aim to restore sight to people living with vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, the leading causes of blindness among children and people aged 50 plus, respectively.  Success in these studies could mean future clinical trials for patients in Canada.

Date: Saturday, June 18th at 8 a.m.

Departure: 8 a.m. for 100 km & 50 km rides

Location: Watson’s Mill in Manotick (about 15 mins south of Ottawa)

Cycle for Sight takes place in Ottawa (June 18) and Toronto (June 25). For more information, please visit www.cycleforsight.ca.
