New is not necessarily better. Last year I reviewed the Sport WSD Short Sleeve Jersey, a lightweight cycling gem from Bontrager. I was impressed with the good balance between functionality—three large back pockets for extra storage and reflective design on the rear pockets — and feminine flair—the shaped-to-your-body (but not tight) fit and the cropped short sleeves.
This year’s Solstice WSD jersey has all of the same functionality but it’s lost the feminine flair. Yes, the pattern is pretty and flowered but the semi-fit jersey is boxy-looking and sized too big. I always wear a size small but this jersey dwarfs me—it’s too wide and too long. Where the Sport WSD was shaped-to-your-body the Solstice, on me, looks shapeless. However, on my friend, who is modeling the back view of it here and who always wears a size medium, the size small looks great.
The Solstice is a sturdy, good-looking jersey that will wear well. Made with perspiration micro-wicking fabric, it keeps you cool and comfortable on the bike. The loose fit makes it suitable for touring trips. The added reflective strips at side of the rear pockets enhance visibility but they are so tiny it’s not clear to me how much reflective power they have. On the other hand, some is always better than none.
The jersey comes with a half-length zipped collar in visibility yellow, black, plumberry, white/green, blue/black, and white/plumberry. Price $40 US
Bottom line: An attractive, good value, loose-fitting jersey–consider sizing down. If, like me you’re a size small, you’re out of luck. The jersey doesn’t come in x-sm.
